2013 Rank: 43
Leader: President Ismael Omar Guelleh

Main Religion: Islam
Population: 923,000 (18,000 Christians)
Source of persecution: Islamic extremism

Christian Persecution in DjiboutiApproximately 95% of the Djiboutian population is Sunni Muslim. While expatriate Christians, Orthodox Christians originating from Ethiopia, and local Christian background believers hardly experience any restrictions to practice their faith, Muslim Background Believers (MBBs) face pressure within the family and the community sphere. Although religious freedom is guaranteed in the constitution, the government attempts to control religious groups including Christians.

  • It remains to be seen if and how Djibouti is able to constructively resist Islamic extremist influences. Pray that Christians will not lose more freedoms.
  • For MBBs who experience a great deal of pressure from family and community
  • For Christian TV and internet sites, which spread the gospel message to those in Djibouti

Heavenly Father, I pray for my brothers and sisters in this country. I pray that You protect them and give them the courage to stay true to You. I pray that they will have opportunity to witness to others about Your grace and mercy and the ears of the Muslims will be open to Your free gift of Salvation! That by Your people staying strong, others will come to know You and love You! Bless Your people dear Lord as only You can and give them Your peace that surpasses ALL understanding as only You can give!

Father, I lift up Djibouti to You. There many believers are being pressured to turn their backs on You. They face things that I have never faced as a believer. I ask for Your great strength and Presence for them. May we never forget and always pray for our brothers and sisters in parts of the world where there is little or no freedom to openly follow Christ. Please have Your way in Me as You give them Your strength and Peace.

Lord, I come to You today on behalf of the nation of Djibouti. I thank You for the relative freedom that is found there, even if it is not as much as other nations. I thank You that the majority of Christians can practice their beliefs in peace and without major persecution, and for the number of MBBs that have come to know You. I pray specifically for the MBBs who are facing great persecution. I pray for Your strength and Your peace to come over each of them. I ask for Your wisdom to be given to each one and Your supernatural direction. I pray that You would help them to be faithful to You despite the persecution that they face, and that even the way that they endure persecution would be a testimony to their persecutors. I know that’s so much easier said than done… but I also know that if you call them to that situation then You will give them everything that they need to be able to endure it. I pray that You would provide for them financially and that You would provide for them relationally, especially if they have lost their families as a result of their decision to follow You.
I also pray that You would continue to work in the government of Djibouti and the way that that government is enforced so that Christians in Djibouti would not lose any more freedoms. I pray that Islmic influence would not gain any more power over Djibouti. I pray that You would continue what You have started in this nation and that even more native Djiboutians would come to know You.
I also pray for the Christian TV and radio programs that are in existence all over this country that are seeking to spread the gospel across Djibouti. Please help them to teach sound doctrine. Help them to reach a wider audience. Help the hearts of the people who will be listening or watching these programs to be prepared and ready to receive Your truth. Help them to be led to churches or believers who can follow up with them and disciple them in their faith.
Finally, I pray that evangelism in Djibouti would continue and would rise! I pray that believers all over Djibouti would receive a new burden for their countrymen to know the gospel and to share it with others. I pray that You would lead and guide them in terms of HOW to do that. I pray that You would grant wisdom so that no one would be reckless, but no one would be timid either. I pray for Your direction and Your discernment and Your love to be shown to all no matter what – so that as many as possible would come to know Your love through Your Word. I ask a blessing over Djibouti today in the name of Jesus and that You would continue the great work that You have started in this nation. In Jesus’ name I ask all of this, amen.
