Flag of Nigeria Rank: 14
Score: 70/100
2013 Rank: 13
Leader: President Goodluck Jonathan
Government: Federal republic
Main Religion: Islam/Christianity
Population: 175 million (89 million Christians)
Source of persecution: Islamic extremism

Christian Persecution in NigeriaLevels of violence against Christians in 2013 remained extremely high, with hundreds of cases of physical aggression, the destruction of nearly 300 churches and the death of 612 Nigerian Christians. Pentecostal leader, Rev. Faye Pama Musa, was shot dead by two suspected Boko Haram members. However, violence from this Islamic terrorist group is not the only form of persecution. Local government and social groups leave hardly any space for Christians to live their own lives; many Christian villages are denied basic facilities, such as wells and schools.

Father God, I thank You that believers are responding to recent pressure with increased prayer, evangelism and care for Muslim Background Believers. Thank You also that Christian youths will resist the temptation to respond with violence to Muslim attacks by Your Wisdom and that Open Doors workers are providing emergency support and trauma counseling to victims of attacks. This poor country riddled by threats of the evil religion of Islam needs Jesus more than ever. Please send Your legions of angles to protect Your people Lord, in Jesus’ Name, AMEN.

  • Paula Peichel

Yes, Father, thank you for all that you are doing in the hearts of believers in Nigeria. Please send your legions of angels to protect the people of Nigeria. Please bless the people with increased encounters of your presence. Please hover over them and bring them to faith and salvation. Please give the believers greater courage, faith, healing, and love. In Jesus name, Amen.

Lord God, help us to pray without ceasing for our suffering brothers and sisters! Lord God would you supply all that they need this day! Give them their daily bread and help them to keep their eyes fixed on you and to continue to have faith knowing how much You Love Them!! May they know that this right now is not eternity! It is still to come. May the Joy of the Lord be their strength!! May you alone be their comfort! I pray for your mercy upon Nigeria and that your name would be proclaimed even louder!!

  • Kenechukwu Nwene Agwu

Dear Father in Heaven. Praise be to your Holy Name. I pray Lord that the believers in Nigeria will be strengthened by your love, your joy and your peace. Please be with them, please give them courage to withstand persecution and even to preach the Gospel to their enemies. May your light shine in Northern Nigeria and even all over the country. May your Spirit comfort them in their distress. Please may the young Christians respond with love to their enemies when attacked. Give them self-control and love to trust in you and repay evil with good. Thank you for your love and grace and mercy. In Jesus Name, Amen.

I give thanks to God that his Word will not return void to him in Nigeria. We will suffer greatly in any case. If they hated our Savior Jesus Christ in his time they will hate us today. The World loves it’s own. Yet we are not of this world. This why we must and will endure thru prayer and trust in God’s Word. For Paul the Apostle wrote in Romans say”For not one of us lives ffor himself, and not one dies for himself; for if we live, we live for the God; therefore whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s. for to this end Christ died and lived again, that He might be Lord both of the dead and of the living.” Rom 14:7-9. But he also said at another time, “And not only this, but we exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulations bring about perrseverance; and preseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.” Rom 4: 3-5.
    Let stand on God’s Word.

Lord, I come before You this morning to lift up the nation of Nigeria and all of the believers who live there. While I am grateful that believers have responded to recent increases in persecution with increased prayer and evangelism, I know that it is still very difficult for them to live in this environment. I am thankful and confident that you are giving them the strength that they need to endure trouble and persecution, and I ask for Your continued protection and provision for all of them. Thank you for every MBB who has found his/her Savior in You – please help the brothers and sisters around each MBB to become their family and to take care of them and provide for them.

I also pray that You would help the Christian youth to develop self-control and a love for their enemies. The “easy” thing to do would be to attack back – but I know that You are calling them to more. You promised to provide a way out when temptation comes, and I pray that You would provide that way out and make it very clear that You do not wish for violence to be perpetuated when opportunities arise to take vengeance.

Finally, I pray for the Open Doors volunteers and workers in Nigeria or who support Nigeria. I pray for Your divine wisdom for every counselor who has to speak to someone who has experience trauma because of persecution. Please give them the right words to say and the right way to comfort as You would comfort. I pray that You would also provide all of the financial needs and the supplies and materials that are needed to continue the work of supporting our persecuted brothers and sisters in Nigeria. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Dear Lord i have heard our brothers and sister’s cry, i have seen their pain. Lord i know you are with them and never abandon them you give them strength everyday, so that may continue to pray. I would like to thank Open Doors for treating and taking care for our brothers and sisters. I would also like to say that im glad our brothers and sister’s are still keeping their faith even in times of persecution – you have not turned away from them sho they shall never turn away from you. God keep them safe always Amen.

John 15:26-27 “But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me: 27A nd ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning.’

It is disturbing to know that Nigeria ranks only 13th, with Boko Haram persecuting so many Christians there today. The only resource I have is to pray for my brothers and sisters there. I know I said “only” resource, like that isn’t enough. I struggle too, just in a different context. I would go there to teach and support in a heartbeat if the means were there. I have no money to go anywhere. I believe God uses people to answer prayers sometimes. I don’t mean to say that God can’t do it without ME; I just want to serve in a way that He wills. Nigeria is a front-line in this battle. I pray for you , Emily. There is a crown waiting for you!

  • Joe Fontanetta

Heavenly Father I humbly ask that you cease the persecution of the beautiful of Nigeria, especially the children an allow them to serve you as they truly want and need to do. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

  • Caleb Yu

I will be working with over 100 International students from Nigeria this summer. I pray that God will give me chances to listen to their stories and I would have boldness to share the Christian love to them.

  • Bro. NnamdiEkwonye

There is severe persecution of Christians in Islamic North of Nigerian but we are grateful to God that we are still alive; sheep among wolves. However, lack of infrastructure is not due to religious sentiments. Even Christian governed parts of the country are without basic infrastructures. Please let that fact be known.

  • Beth Snow

Father God, thank you for providing an outlet for Christians in Nigeria. We realize that Islamic beliefs are prominent in this society, but You have a better, bigger plan for them. In Jesus’s name, I ask that you bless all Nigerians and give the freedom to worship as they choose. Also, Father, if they cannot get freedom to worship from their government, I ask that you grant them safety and provision, in Jesus’s name. Cover them with the blood of Jesus and protect them from all attack and harm that comes from the adversary, whether the attacks are through mortal men, or demonic spirits. In Jesus’s name, I pray for their continued favor and grace with you. Pour our your love on the inhabitants of Nigeria and guide them throughout their lives. In Jesus’s name. Amen!

Father in Heaven, thank You that You are the sovereign Lord of all nations. Thank you for the Christians in Nigeria, their faith and perseverance. Lord would you cause Your face to shine upon them, defend and protect your precious children in every way from the work of the Enemy. May Your love and grace flow in the land. In Jesus name. Amen

  • Brian

Father, be gracious to them and bless them. May Your face shine upon them that Your way may be know. And Your salvation among all nations. Give them strength to endure and unending joy to worship during times of persecution and trouble. Protect those giving resources and encouragement to further the gospel. Let the people praise You O God! Let all the people praise You!

  • Edith Kurie

Almighty Living Lord, I thank You for Your covering of safe protection for Your Christian children in harm’s way. I pray their love will spread like a fire into the cold, hardened hearts of those who persecute them, in Jesus’ name, amen.

  • Bodmas Adex

Dear God, I pray that you will keep Christians in Nigeria safe and grace them not to deny the faith in the face of these persecutions but rather bear it. God do deliver the kidnapped girls by Boko Haram and comfort the families. Give wisdom to the government to handle matter wisely. Jesus guaranteed life after death but we shall overcome IJN

Lord, I come to You this morning on behalf of the nation of Nigeria. I ask that You would help me to pray according to Your will this morning for this nation. Firstly, I want to pray for every believer. You know the threats that they face despite living in a place where freedom of religion is “guaranteed.” You see how voiceless they are – and I ask that You would fight for them and defend them when they cannot fight for themselves. I ask that You would be their protector since the government is not protecting them. I pray that you would strengthen them and strengthen their faith and help them not to live in fear despite the fact that, in the natural, no one could blame them for doing so. I ask for Your covering over each one of them and that they would continue to be effective evangelists in sharing Your Word and speaking about You to others despite the risks and the danger. I ask that You would help them to grow stronger in You and to have the grace to be able to fellowship with You in their sufferings. I know that’s very easy to say from the other side… but they are already going through it and I just want You to help them to be strong.
I pray specifically for those who have experienced personal loss from the violence that has come to this nation against Christians. I pray for widows who have lost their husbands and women who have lost their sons and daughters and loved ones. No words can take away their grief and their pain. But I know that Your Spirit can comfort them in a way that no one else can, and I ask that You would minister so strongly to them and help them to cling so tightly to You! I pray against depression and hopelessness and PTSD and anything that would incapacitate these woman and men from being able to still live their lives on earth as a light and witness for You. It has to be supernatural – in the natural it’s completely understandable for them to check out and live in hopelessness and despair. No one but You can help this.
I do thank You for the work that Open Doors and other organizations have been able to do already in Nigeria. I thank You for every widow who has been visited and helped and encouraged and trained – for each provision that was made for each family and for the work that You are doing among them. Truly You are to be praised and to receive glory from this!! I continue to pray for the protection of Open Doors staff along with all other organizations that are seeking to help the persecuted in Nigeria. I ask that You would protect them as they work, give them wisdom in terms of where to go and where not to go, provide financially for all resources that they need to minister to and equip families struggling with loss and grief. I ask that You would use Open Doors staff to train locals to continue the work of spreading the gospel and training up new believers.
I know that there is darkness over Nigeria, but Your light is stronger and the darkness cannot overcome it. I pray that You would continue to work in Nigeria and continue, despite persecution, to bring many many souls into Your kingdom. In Jesus’ name I ask all of this, amen.

For God’s Spirit to be at work, comforting families who have suffered trauma or loss.
Thank God for the generous gifts of Open Doors supporters to widows and orphans.
For the protection of the Open Doors team as they take Bibles, relief and training to believers in need.
