Christian Persecution in TanzaniaAlthough the majority of Tanzania’s population is Christian, recent years showed an increase of political Islam, initially at the Zanzibar Archipelago – a group of islands belonging to Tanzania. The Islamist separatist group called the Association for Islamic Mobilization and Propagation (UAMSHO) has used Zanzibar as a springboard to establish a new Muslim state. The idea of a new Islamic state gains popularity among Muslims, even on the mainland. Currently, a constitutional review process –which includes the position of Islam in Tanzania, is underway. Within this context, it is not sure if the Tanzanian church sufficiently realizes that the observed dip in Christian persecution (in comparison to last year) could very well be of a temporary nature, and could easily intensify if the current constitutional review process fails.

  • Praise God that there has been improvement in Tanzania for Christians overall in the past year.
  • For protection for Christians and church leaders on the Zanzibar islands.
  • Some teachings in local Mosques and Madrassas are still negative about Christianity, and lay the groundwork for lasting negative attitudes towards Christians. Pray that the leaders will have a real encounter with Jesus.

Dearest Heavenly Father, I come to You in the name of Your precious Son, Jesus. Thank-You for hearing and answering the prayers of Your children. Thank-You for our brothers and sisters in Tanzania. Please give strength and wisdom to them as many are being persecuted for their faith. I ask for You to comfort those who are suffering because of the recent attacks and deaths. Please protect the freedom of religion there. For the church leaders on Zanzibar and Pemba Islands, I ask that You would be their Refuge. Please cover them with Your wings of protection. I give You thanks for the freedom to share the Gospel and I pray that the Christians will bravely and lovingly share The Good News with their Muslim neighbors. May Your Kingdom come, may Your will be done for the Glory of Jesus. Amen

Lord, I come to You this morning on behalf of the nation of Tanzania. I ask that You would help me to pray this morning according to Your will and Your heart and in agreement with my brothers and sisters through Open Doors around the world.

I pray for wisdom for those who are involved in the process of reviewing the national constitution. I ask that decisions would be made that protect Christians and continue to give them the right to meet and assemble freely. I ask that this nation would allow freedom of religion and would not place any hindrances on Christians having equal rights. Please allow those who have the power to determine constitutional change to be fair and wise and just in their decisions. Protect the rights of those who are under attack and who cannot fight for themselves or defend themselves. Please help the government of this country to make decisions that are in line with Your will so that Your blessing can remain on this nation.

I pray specifically for protection for church leaders on Zanzibar and the Pemba Islands. I ask that You would shield them and guard them against anyone who would want to cause them physical harm. Please give all of the wisdom in terms of where to go and not go – help them to make decisions that will not place them in harm’s way. I ask for supernatural protection and covering over each of them, and over each believer in Tanzania overall.

Lord, thank You that at this point there is still freedom to preach the gospel in Tanzania. I pray that You would help for the believers in this nation to take advantage of that fact and to be bold in sharing the gospel with others, especially Mslms. I ask that You would give them the words to speak and the opportunity to share You with others in the nation who don’t yet know You. I pray for creativity in evangelism and for just a widespread sharing of the gospel in this nation in Jesus’ name, amen.

Father God in Heaven, I pray in your Sovereign name for my brothers and sisters in Tanzania, that Lord you would give them strength to endure, peace in the midst of trials, and Holy boldness to speak of the gospel of Christ. Thank you Lord for the miracles already happening there, and we pray Holy Spirit for a constant revival there. Lord we pray for your Sovereign hand of protection on Christians and church leaders on the Zanzibar Islands, and may they be a light that shines to others. We also pray that Muslims and unbelievers would come to know the truth. We pray for a revelation for them that might come to know the way, the truth, the life, Christ our king. In Jesus mighty name we pray. Amen.
